Australia V England: Third One Day International

The first One Day International (ODI) cricket match was played on 5 January 1971 between England and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the middle of the 1970-71 Ashes series.

It happened during the third Test, which was called off after incessant rain on the first three days of the match, as the Australian Cricket Board suffered a major financial blow.

It was then that the two teams decided to save the one-day fixture, similar to the domestic Gillette Cup, which has been held in England since 1963, to the fifth day.

This came after heated discussions between the two sides, which also involved Sir Donald Bradman, to recoup some of the money lost in the crash. A recommendation to play a replacement Test at the end of the series was rejected as England eventually settled for a one-dayer.

“We spent so much time in the dressing room that we were thankful for the game,” said Ray Illingworth, then captain of the England cricket team, a few years later.

So when conditions improved on the fourth day, plans for the first ODI match were in full swing. Local newspapers called it a “small test”, while television coverage described it as “an international knockout match”.

Billed as MCC v Australia – as it was not considered an official match – and with last-minute sponsorship from Tobacco Rothmans, the match started at the MCG.
